This week on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th August, Plymouth will again be the host to one of the most explosive and dynamic events to be held anywhere in the UK. All of us at Lawsons in Plymouth are truly proud of the way this event has taken shape over the years. Yes, it is the British Fireworks Championships 2014 and this year, as it celebrates its 18th anniversary, there are six professional pyrotechnic companies competing to show thousands of visitors what a truly dramatic, coruscating firework display should look like.
This year promises to be a star date in the calendar once again. The show, which will take place – where else? – on Plymouth Hoe, is hosted by The Events Services Association (TESA) and Plymouth City Council in association with The Herald and the University of St Mark & St John. It is going to be one of the biggest displays of fireworks you could possible see anywhere in the UK. The displays will involve more than four tonnes of fireworks set off by the six companies who will each be very keen on their battle to win the much coveted Championship title.
Inevitably, the fireworks do not all go up at once but are carefully staged so that each company gets its turn over the two days. The first to blaze a trail is Shellscape from Maidenhead in Berkshire who will open the programme on Tuesday. They will be followed by Blitz Fireworks from Crewe in Cheshire and then by Northern Lights Fireworks from Trowbridge in Wiltshire. The competition will follow on Wednesday starting with PYRO 1 from Hatfield in Hertfordshire. Followed by Reaction Fireworks from Stanley in County Durham and finally by MLE Pyrotechnics from Davantry in Northants. The first display on each day will start as dusk falls at 9.30pm.
But do not wait until after you’ve had your supper to join us in Plymouth. The fun starts much earlier – with a programme of entertainment led by Heart Radio commencing at 6.30pm. Naturally, we all hope that you have a chance to spend the day with us first and come and visit us at Lawsons to see what we have in store for you to buy for the home – well, just about everything! To ensure you get a good place to park at a reasonable price, Drake Circus is offering parking for £4 per car from 4pm to 1am and most of the city car parks will be open until midnight each night. You will find open air eating and drinking as well as live entertainment happening both before and after the displays. Come and be dazzled!
